The Sounds of Silence

Ginny – CJMP’s never-one-to-complain assistant in all tower endeavors

By Don Mitchinson
As many have you have heard – or better put – not been able to hear, our aging transmitter had been showing the croak in its voice for the last two weeks, until it uttered its last words last week. The timing couldn’t have been much worse, as we were in the final stages of testing our new antenna on Gallagher Hill.

Even though we’re close, ooh so close, to finally getting a better signal, all you hear now is the silence of a turned off transmitter. It’s been a couple years work to get this far, so we’re hoping you stick with us for just a while longer.

The antenna has been mounted on Gallagher Hill. We’ve received official approval. And finally, a new transmitter is on its way. We are planning a celebration for this event whenever it happens. Stay tuned to Facebook and the website for updates – and when it does happen, let us know if it’s made a difference in your listening locations.

We hoped we’d beat the BC Ferries schedule with the new ferry running between Comox and Powell River, but it looks like they might just win that race by a hair.

Your patience and unending support is appreciated.

NEWCOMERS SOCIAL
CJMP will be at the Newcomers Social at Dwight Hall tomorrow night (Tuesday May 16) from 6-9pm, so make a point of dropping by and seeing us. Ask about our new shows and our survival plans for the future. You can always volunteer to take a more active role in that lifeline support. We have had some amazing staff and continue to rely on the work of dedicated volunteers, especially in times like the year ahead of us, when we don’t have a grant to pay staff.

CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS
Because of the immense support we’ve received from the community (Cranberry Hall, Regional District, Community Forest), donations from the Top The Tower campaign, significant reductions in Telus fees, reduced installation charges from TriLinks communications, we have enough in our Tower Fund to cover the equipment and installation, as well as monthly tower rental charges for the next year.

Unfortunately the failed transmitter was not part of our budget. We have enough to pay for it by combining funds from our Contingency and Sponsorship Funds, but if you’d like to help out, we’d certainly accept donations or sustaining memberships with grateful thanks.

The coveted bathroom cleaning prize from CJMP’s Top the Tower campaign went to Debbie, who kindly donated it to the Powell River Brain Injury Society.

Our board chair Tara Thurber was happy to oblige. Thank you Tara and thank you Debbie!

Little Hut Curry helps CJMP Top the Tower!

On Saturday, May 21 community radio fans flocked to Little Hut Curry, to enjoy a delicious four-course meal AND support CJMP 90.1 FM.

Thanks the generosity of restauranteurs Mohinder Singh and Janmeet Kaur, an additional $375 was raised for CJMP 90.1 FM — bringing us closer to our “Top the Tower” goal.

To learn more about our “Top the Tower” campaign go to cjmp.ca/15k.

Thank you again Mohinder, Janmeet and the Little Hut Curry team. Keep calm and curry on!
