PRCRS Annual General Meeting Notes

On Thursday, November 24th, The Powell River Community Radio Society (PRCRS, operating the non-profit CJMP 90.1fm Powell River Community Radio) held its Annual General Meeting at the Community Resource Centre (4752 Joyce Ave.) in Powell River, BC.

There were reports by the Treasurer Roger Thorn, Staff Members Mel Edgar, Carrie Swiggum, Giovanni Spezzacatena and Ioni Wais. Secretary David Parkinson and new in-coming board member David Joseph relayed Chair and Technical reports by Chair Jason Leane and director Don Mitchinson.

The new 2017 Board of Directors acclaimed (with posts to be determined) are:

  • David Parkinson
  • Don Mitchinson
  • Suzan Roos
  • Ionatan Waisgluss

Thanks to all who attended and enjoyed a retrospective slideshow of CJMP’s and snacked on appies provided by CJMP’s newest sponsor The Convenient Chef.

CJMP 90.1 FM Station Report 2016

Thanks to the receipt of a Radiometres from the Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) CJMP was

able to hire a team of three staff (April 2016 to February 2017):

❏  Mel Edgar, Station Manager
❏  Carrie Swiggum, News Director
❏  Giovanni Spezzacatena, Community Engagement Editor/Producer

CJMP was also able to hire Ioni Wais as Production Assistant Intern for the summer of 2016 through the CRFC’s Youth on Air Grant.

Achievements this year include:

❖  Fundraising

➢     Through a mix of internal and external fundraising CJMP Staff have helped raise over $7,000, well over half of the $10,000 goal written into the grant.

■     Internal Fundraising: Reuse-a-Thon, Spring Fund Drive, November Sustaining Membership Drive, Powell River Arts, Culture and Heritage Grant, Car Wash with Powell River Fire Rescue, CJMP Photobooths (People’s Prom, Powell River Pride, Vale Society Halloween Ball)

■     External Fundraising: Cowbell Cares Fundraiser, Little Hut Curry Fundraiser, First Credit Union Theatre Under the Stars, Vinyl Flip

❖  Increased Community Engagement   

➢      Local News Coverage through CJMP News, News Bulletins and contracted audio documentaries: including Powell River Dreams, Tla’amin Language Circle, Garden Sharing Network, Powell River Youth Council Tapping the Groundswell Report, Kathaumixw, WildSafeBC, Powell River Food Security Report, Third Crossing Society, Tla’amin Nation Election Coverage

➢     Expanded Local Arts Coverage: Community Events Listings, Coastal Colour (recorded 5 minute weekly arts segment on CJMP News)

➢      CJMP Presence at Community Events: Canada Day, Blackberry Festival, FCU Theatre Under the Stars, Powell River Pride, Halloween Ball, PRISMA on the Beach, Cowbell Cares a CJMP Fundraiser, Powell River Blackberry Festival

➢     Live Remote Broadcasting at Community Events: PRISMA on the Beach, Cowbell Cares: a CJMP Fundraiser, Powell River Blackberry Festival

➢      Public Service Announcements (PSAs) Produced for Local Non Profits: including Friends of Louis Riel Society, Powell River Community Foundation, Powell River Hospice Society, Métis Society, Kathaumixw, Malaspina Art Society (in production)

➢      Supported CommunityProduced Radio Content: Documentaries, Community Resource Centre, Sounds Like Powell River (Grant in Aid from the City of Powell River)

❖  Expanded and Improved Communication

➢      Sponsorships: Timely production of PSA’s and promos

➢      Calendars: Regular events Calendar updates, and management of studio bookings for programmers and volunteers

➢      Updates: Monthly e-newsletters, regular website updates, blog posts including photo galleries, social media

➢      Outreach: emails to community groups about free PSA’s

➢      Materials Production: signage, posters, brochure and schedule updates, flyer designs, stickers (including bumper stickers), buttons and T-shirts

❖  Training and Education

➢      Radio Happy Hour: A CJMP Open House where volunteers and new programmers are invited come in for training on the soundboard and in station policies

➢      Workshops: News 101, Mixing with Audacity, Elements of Documentary Story Production, upcoming workshop on Media Literacy / Elements of News Production

➢      Training Materials:  use of studio call box in the studio, how to podcast, etc.

➢      CJMP WIKI: online resource for volunteers and programmers including training materials, station policies, meeting agendas and minutes

❖  At the Station

➢      Regular Open Hours

➢      Equipment purchases: microphones, recording equipment

➢      Equipment sign out to volunteers and programmers

➢      Lending of sound system to community groups (PowTown Roller Derby)
