In August 2017, the Powell River Public Library hosted their first Radio 101camp for teens. During the four day camp Library teen services coordinator, Megan Cole and journalist Carrie Swiggum worked with eight campers to create radio documentaries. The first day of the camp was spent learning about radio and listening to other radio documentaries, and then the groups split into two and started working on their own radio pieces. The groups learned how to build and plan a story, how to use digital recorders, how to edit audio and how to do interviews. The final result were two radiodocumentaries about the Powell River Public Library, but they had different approaches. The journalists for the Radio 101 camp were Kieren Hollmann-Prichard, Tyler Koopman-Gough, Liam Gottfried, Elijah Hueston, Hannah Krausz, Phoenix Kamon, Gabe Dickson, and Ava Houle.
The Radio 101 Camp’s first documentary, Library Is Heart Of Community, will air Wednesday mornings at 10am on RAD DOCS , CJMP’s Radio Documentary Show. Make sure to tune in!
