CJMP90.1FM applied for and successfully secured a Community Gaming Grant to enhance our current emergency broadcasting capability!! Of the $50,500 in funding earmarked for four non-profit organizations in Powell River, the Powell River Radio Community Society received $10,800.
This will cover a portion of our operating costs specific to our Emergency Broadcast Services Program in order to guarantee uptime during extended power outages for the next year. We are also adding remote broadcasting access to our FM signal for emergency personnel.
Since 2016, this program has offered automated emergency messaging to the local Powell River municipality. In 2017, we increased our transmitter power and signal strength (remember our ‘Top the Tower’ campaign?) to extend FM coverage and the Emergency Broadcast Services Program to the whole of Powell River and surrounding areas.
Running in the background, the Emergency Broadcast Services Program offers an automated way to interrupt and bypass local programming with a warning signal followed by the actual emergency message specific to our broadcast area, repeated multiple times.
With the station’s in-studio soundboard and microphones, CJMP programmers can manually interrupt a scheduled broadcast to communicate follow-up messages or directions to the public in times of major local emergencies.
The Emergency Broadcasting Services Program benefits the whole municipality of Powell River, the qathet Regional District and the local Tla’amin First Nation. The population of the program’s coverage is nearing 20,000 people.

The live programmers of CJMP are locked in the studio by Illumicorp ‘management’ after receiving a demand that money be raised or else Valentine Mountain gets it! They are given twelve hours. The volunteers fervently try to raise the money through various appeals to the community and the situation becomes more desperate as more programmers arrive not knowing that they too are now trapped…
At the top of every hour, between 9:00am – 9:00pm, CJMP’s first ever Fundraiser Radio Play will be unfolding! Join us, as the voice talents of our very own CJMP DJs bring you Steven Lohrenz’s exciting radio drama, “The Longest Day (In Radio)”. A story of how a handful of small-town community radio station volunteers (and Cher?!!) band together to Save Valentine Mountain and keep community radio alive! (Disclaimer : No Valentine Mountains were harmed in the making of this radio play)
