The Sounds of Silence

Ginny – CJMP’s never-one-to-complain assistant in all tower endeavors

By Don Mitchinson
As many have you have heard – or better put – not been able to hear, our aging transmitter had been showing the croak in its voice for the last two weeks, until it uttered its last words last week. The timing couldn’t have been much worse, as we were in the final stages of testing our new antenna on Gallagher Hill.

Even though we’re close, ooh so close, to finally getting a better signal, all you hear now is the silence of a turned off transmitter. It’s been a couple years work to get this far, so we’re hoping you stick with us for just a while longer.

The antenna has been mounted on Gallagher Hill. We’ve received official approval. And finally, a new transmitter is on its way. We are planning a celebration for this event whenever it happens. Stay tuned to Facebook and the website for updates – and when it does happen, let us know if it’s made a difference in your listening locations.

We hoped we’d beat the BC Ferries schedule with the new ferry running between Comox and Powell River, but it looks like they might just win that race by a hair.

Your patience and unending support is appreciated.

NEWCOMERS SOCIAL
CJMP will be at the Newcomers Social at Dwight Hall tomorrow night (Tuesday May 16) from 6-9pm, so make a point of dropping by and seeing us. Ask about our new shows and our survival plans for the future. You can always volunteer to take a more active role in that lifeline support. We have had some amazing staff and continue to rely on the work of dedicated volunteers, especially in times like the year ahead of us, when we don’t have a grant to pay staff.

CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS
Because of the immense support we’ve received from the community (Cranberry Hall, Regional District, Community Forest), donations from the Top The Tower campaign, significant reductions in Telus fees, reduced installation charges from TriLinks communications, we have enough in our Tower Fund to cover the equipment and installation, as well as monthly tower rental charges for the next year.

Unfortunately the failed transmitter was not part of our budget. We have enough to pay for it by combining funds from our Contingency and Sponsorship Funds, but if you’d like to help out, we’d certainly accept donations or sustaining memberships with grateful thanks.

CJMP 90.1FM is happy to announce that we have a new Sponsor Coordinator!!

Leeanne Barr is a new volunteer to CJMP and is here to help the current sponsors with renewals and to bring on new sponsors!

Leeanne is a new transplant to Powell River hailing from Vancouver. She is the human to a Chihuahua-mix named Carlos. She made the move to Powtown last September and has never looked back. “The main thing that drew me to Powell River is the sense of community. People are genuine, they support each other and take care of each other here. And everyone says hello!! I was really missing that in Vancouver.”

She’s knocking on the doors of local businesses and non-profit organizations all around Powell River so keep an eye out for her. And if you can’t wait, email her at sponsor@cjmp.ca.

Why should you sponsor CJMP?

CJMP is a non-profit, local alternative to corporate mainstream media.

We engage, educate, entertain, challenge & provide community access to the airwaves.

  • Sponsorship gets your organization’s message out to local listeners and spreads awareness of who you are and what you are all about.
  • Sponsoring CJMP demonstrates your commitment to community radio which is truly the voice of the community!
  • Sponsors help pay expenses to keep the station running and the signal on.

We could not survive without our sponsors side by side with our sustaining members.

So head over to CJMP.ca/sponsor to find out more and email Leeanne at sponsor@cjmp.ca when you’re ready!
